My grandfather was born in St Kilda, a remote island near Scotland in 1945. There wasn't a school on the island so he studied at home. His teacher taught him on the radio and he sent his homework to her by post. Sometimes he talked to other pupils on the radio, too.
He enjoyed talking to one girl, Flora, and often laughed and joked with her. He felt happy speaking to her but he never met her.
My grandfather left the island when he was 18 and went to Glasgow. One day he went into a cafe and saw a beautiful girl. He knew she was the girl for him. He asked the girl her name. 'Flora' she said. 'I come from a little island in the west of Scotland ...'
