Redecorate Your Room!

You are in 6th grade, and you’ve realized your room is decorated for a much younger person. You want to redecorate your private space. To do so, you need to come up with a plan!

You want to start with the flooring in your room. Determine the area of the flooring in your room.
• Measure your room, find the area. Draw it on graph paper. Use the scale 1 side length of a square on your grid paper = 1 foot in real-life.
• Find new flooring on a website of your choice. Suggestions include Lowe’s, Home Depot, Menards and other local stores. Clip the image and price of the flooring you decide to propose to install.
• Determine the amount of the flooring you need to order.
o How many square feet, how many boxes?
o Do you need to order extra? How much extra? Why? (Hint: read the directions!)
o What is the total price of the flooring you are ordering?

Now move to the walls of your room.
• Determine the area of your walls. You likely have four walls in your room. Measure them. What is the total surface area of the walls, the area of all the walls in your room added together?
• On another piece of graph paper, draw your four walls. Label them using the cardinal directions of North, South, East and West. Draw in any windows and doors in your room. Does your surface area include the windows and doors or not? Explain.
• If one gallon of paint covers approximately 380 square feet of walls, how many gallons of paint do you need to order to paint your walls? Do you need extra? Why or why not?
• Using a website of your choice, determine the cost of the paint you need to purchase. Again, you may wish to use Lowe’s, Home Depot, Menards or similar sites.

Now that the shell is renewed, it is time to personalize it. How many windows are in your room? What is their size?
• Find appropriate window coverings for your windows on a website. Write down the size needed to fully cover the windows from top to bottom and left to right.
• What type and color of window coverings are you choosing to use? Write it down, including an image.
• What is the cost of your window coverings?

Measure your furniture and draw it in on your floor plan. Show the size and shape in your room and the amount of space it takes up. Label everything completely.

Write up a remodeling proposal. It should include all measurements, calculations, and diagrams. It should include the cost to redecorate your space. It should include visual samples of any purchases, such as flooring and window coverings.

Explain all choices you made.

Turn in your proposal and the floor plans you drew.

Grading:
This assignment is worth 10 points.
The drawings of the floorplan, walls, and windows are worth 3 points. It should include the measurements and be drawn to reflect these measurements.
The calculations are worth 4 points. Accurately calculating the amount of flooring, paint and cost are important skills.
The remodeling proposal is worth 3 points. The presentation should be written using complete sentences, explanations of choices, and visual samples. Professionalism is important when writing up a proposal of any sort.
